The 2001 Oscar Voting Guide, Continued

Here's where logic leaves the building. These are the awards that require intense research, widespread opinion polling, and wild guessing. I've provided my picks, in the unlikely event that I am psychic, and can help you win your Oscar Pool, but I would not bet the proverbial farm on these categories.

Art Direction
Pick: Gladiator.
Why: The Colisseum was AWESOME. Nuff said.
Cinematography
Pick: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Why: The sweeping camera work on the graceful rooftop/treetop fights will beat out the graphic clashes of Gladiator.
Costume Design
Pick: Quills
Why: It was a beautiful film, and I think voters will want to acknowledge it with at least one award.
Documentary: Feature
Pick: Sound and Fury
Why: I'm going with this one because it generated the strongest emotions at Sundance when it was screened, even though Into the Arms of Strangers had a theatrical release.
Documentary: Short Subject
Pick: The Man on Lincoln's Nose
Why: Honestly, I like the title. Otherwise, I haven't a clue.
Film Editing
Pick: Traffic
Why: Of all the nominees, this was the film most reliant on good editing, and looked like the most difficult task for an editor.
Makeup
Pick: Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Why: I hated the Whos, but I have to admit that they looked great. Making Jim Carrey look like the Grinch deserves an Oscar.
Original Score
Pick: Gladiator
Why: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was a close second, but this score stays with you longer.
Original Song
Pick: Wonder Boys
Why: Because who wouldn't want to see Bob Dylan win an Oscar? Maybe Soy Bomb will be there!
Short Film: Animated
Pick: Rejected
Why: It is sick, twisted, coarsely-made and utterly hillarious. Wait, that means in probably WON'T win. Oh well...
Sound
Pick: The Perfect Storm
Why: Sound was a huge element of this film. It's probably the most obvious guess.
Sound Effects Editing
Pick: U-571
Why: Because the only challenger is Space Cowboys, which makes almost no sense.

Visual Effects
Pick: Hollow Man
Why: This is a wild guess, because both Gladiator and The Perfect Storm are also very strong contenders. I picked Hollow Man because the visual effects were the ONLY thing good about the film.

Good luck on your Office Oscar Pool! Hope you win!
